Chaplaincy

Serving as a volunteer chaplain in the prison system comes with an extraordinary degree of service and satisfaction. Although it takes a high level of commitment, it is not difficult. Working in the prison environment is different, it is a culture all of it’s own and it has so much more to offer us than anything we could imagine. The common denominator of all the men and women in prison is the sense of isolation, not just from friends and family, but from any direct contact with “free world” folks that are not prison security or staff. The respect and appreciation that inmates have for chaplaincy volunteers is truly something to behold.

There are any number of ways that one can volunteer to work in the prison; becoming a guide on the spiritual path of awakening could not be better realized anywhere else. The inmates that I have worked with for almost a decade express enormous gratitude for being offered the tools of spiritual practice, the ability to recognize and transform their minds’ through study, contemplation and meditation.
