Serving as a chaplaincy volunteer in a prison has an extraordinary degree of service and satisfaction. Working in the prison environment is unique, it’s a culture all its own with more to offer than anything we could imagine, yet, like most anywhere else, there’s happiness, comradery, and Joy, maybe even more so. And, there’s the sense of isolation, from friends and family outside the fence. The respect and appreciation that inmates have for chaplaincy volunteers is truly something to behold.
There are any number of ways for a volunteer to work in a prison; becoming a guide on the spiritual path of awakening could not be better realized anywhere else. The inmates we work with have enormous gratitude for receiving the tools of spiritual practice, to recognize and transform the mind through study, contemplation and meditation.
