Since the 1970s a great deal of research has been done world wide on prison rehabilitation programs that include education, vocation, drug treatment, and religious or faith based spiritual programs and their effect on the prison environment, security, and recidivism. Although no definitive conclusions can be drawn as to what will work in every situation, the research has provided a much better context in which to view and review the whole approach to punishment and corrections and what options are possible in working with law breakers including and instead of simple incarceration.
